Cognitive Development of Preschoolers at Home

Early childhood education has a substantial impact on the cognitive development of preschoolers in lower primary school. The kids need to improve their analytical skills at an early age and also the ability to focus and develop critical thinking. It helps the kids’ brain to grasp the concepts, think critically, develop reasoning skills and finally in remembering the concepts well in a fun way.

Pretend play for learning: In the formative years, cognitive development learning happens through play in a fun way. Some of the activities that the parents can do to help their children are to pretend to play with kids that may serve as a link between the social world and the individualized world of cognitive skills. The kids can have a tea party with the kitchen set, build a house with blocks, dress like a doctor or a teacher and they can be encouraged to do activities that would further help them develop cognitive skills.

Concrete materials for learning : Kids at this age find it difficult to imagine things or understand abstract thoughts. It is therefore very important to show them concrete examples to make them understand. The best thing to do is to use everyday household items or anything that is easily available in the market. The children can use the jars at home to compare and contrast the sizes, use their fingers to write on sand to form letters or do any drawing. This allows them to understand concepts and connect the world around them to their learning.

Playing rhymes and songs for learning: The kids learn through listening and singing rhymes. The best way to improve language in kids is to play songs or rhymes everyday at home. When the kids hear it everyday, they pick the words and the rhythm easily. This helps the kids to improve their language skills easily through singing and doing actions with words.

Learning through art and craft: The preschoolers learn through doing a lot of hands-on activities to learn different things. Making use of paper to make a boat or a rocket that helps them learn and create new things. Exploring to draw simple things like a house, cat and exploring  paints to learn the names of the basic colours can help them to not only learn but also have fun at the same time. Colours have cognitive properties and help kids in increasing their imagination.

Sequence learning: Picture story games of arranging the story according to the sequence can be used to improve kids cognitive skills, especially logical problem solving and memory retention. The other examples of sequence learning like sequencing cards according to their number and following a recipe to prepare a sandwich can help too to make it a fun learning experience that increases cognitive skills of the kids.

Board games: Kids can be taught to play games like snakes and ladders, checkers and other simple games  to help them increase their IQ, concentration and help in focusing on developing the kids cognitive skills to a large extent.

Free play and learning: The kids should be allowed to play freely to increase their creative, innovative, imaginative skills and help them develop critical problem- solving skills as they grow up. The unstructured play creates an opportunity for the kids to explore different things to learn at their own pace.

Questioning and learning: It is very important to improve the kids’ questioning skills to develop cognitive skills. Open-ended questions help the kids to use different words and in turn use wide vocabulary to answer the questions and inturn also improves their ability to express their thoughts, put across their ideas and express their opinions.

To enable a cycle of learning by development, in early childhood, parents should create chances to include both play and learning that can be fun for the children.. There is a great diversity in children’s development, in early childhood education because we can definitely explore multiple avenues to develop their thinking skills and help them improve their cognitive skills.
